FAQ: What Cameras Do We Use?

If you asked what kind of camera we use, then you have been directed to this post!  Welcome!  If we don’t cover something here, please feel free to ask.

The Cameras:

iPhone 7 Plus

Until December 2018, every photo I took in my Instagram feed was on my iPhone 7 Plus.  The camera served me well and it was seriously the only thing I used to get to 10k Instagram followers!

The photo above was taken with that phone.  In December, I upgraded to the following equipment:

Canon 6D:

I went with this because my Instagram friends recommended it.  I also loved that my phone is the remote, it has wifi so I can transfer photos directly from camera to phone, and it has a video function.  I haven’t used the video feature yet though!  This camera is popular and it has been around a while.  There are a lot of Canon 6d tutorials on Youtube to help you get to know the basics.  Win!

50 mm Lens:

I contacted several photographers and the 50mm lens was mentioned time and time again as a great all purpose lens and for portraits.  This Canon 6D kit came with that lens at the time, but it is currently only sold separately.  You can find the 50 mm  I have here.

55″ Compact Light Tripod:

This tripod broke!  I’m waiting on a new one to arrive.

12″ Flexible Tripod:

I use this so much more than I ever expected.  If you see a photo of our bus taken from the very front, the camera was more than likely placed on this tripod for the photo.

Canon 40 mm Wide Angle Lens:

This was recommended to me for taking photos of the inside of our bus. I use the 40 mm wide angle lens almost every time I take photos of our interior.

Why did I upgrade?

We moved into a dark apartment and I wasn’t able to take any great photos of my kids with my iPhone.  I knew we would start traveling soon and I wanted to be able to take my photography to the next level.

Editing

Lightroom:

I have used so many photo editing apps on my phone over the last year.  They served me well, but I wish I had just skipped straight ahead to using Lightroom.  You can use it on your phone or on your computer and it does great things.  Cameras can’t capture the same colors and light our eyes see.  I use Lightroom to recreate the colors we experienced in real life.

Camera and Lightroom Tutorial

I like to go to YouTube to find tutorials on how to use my specific camera.  After a while, I got tired of digging and purchased a class.  After I took the class, people began commenting on my photography and that led to this post!

Here are my photos before/after using Lightroom

The class is called Visual Storytelling.  They teach you how to take better photos, give you 10 Lightroom presets to use on your photos, and share Lightroom tips.  I’m only halfway through the course and I’ve already learned so much.  You can sign up for Visual Storytelling here.
