We love wool dryer balls! At the beginning of 2018, we transformed how we did laundry. I was tired of watching Rylee constantly scratch and wondered if it was related to the chemicals we washed our clothes in. On top of that, laundry soap and dryer sheets are expensive. As part of our journey to live smaller, we were also trying to decrease our spending. Dryer balls did that for us!
Instead of Dryer Sheets…
Did you know the dryer sheets you are buying could potentially tear up your dryer? I didn’t. Not wanting to use dryer sheets had nothing to do with the health of my dryer, but I did have a long list of other things I didn’t like about them:
- Chemicals and Rylee’s itchy skin
- Finding them all around my house
- I didn’t love the fake chemical scents
I found wool dryer balls so intriguing for several reasons:
- Reusable- no waste and saves money
- I could use them with essential oils
- No chemicals
So, how do they work?
We have 10 wool dryer balls and at the current time we are still in our home. Just so they aren’t scattered across the house, we keep all 10 dryer balls in the dryer at all times. Every 4 loads or so, I go in and put a couple of drops of essential oils on each one. My go to oils for this job are lavender, purify, wild orange, or citrus bliss.
The dryer balls tumble around with the clothes in the machine, obsorbing excess water. We have found the dry time has been shorter by 10-15 minutes since we started using these. So, they end up saving on our electric bill as well.
I know we won’t be worried about the electric bill when we are on the bus and doing our laundry at the laundromat, but it is nice to know that we will be doing our part to conserve energy. We will also shorten the time we need to be at the laundromat by a few minutes which works out great as well.
Do dryer balls work?
They leave our clothes smelling great and mostly static free. Chris still has problems with his work slacks having static. If I’m being honest though, I never really had a handle on that when we were using dryer sheets. He still needed to have a bottle of Static Guard on hand even before we switched. I won’t be going. back to dryer sheets. The initial cost of the wool dryer balls was a lot more than dryer sheets, but they are re-usable. In the end, this is an investment that is going to save money. I recommend Woolzie’s brand.
Part 2 Coming soon! Things are about to get really weird, because our laundry soap is actually a berry!
